Zpey Competition Fly Casting Lines - Information and Cutting advice

10.06.2010

We have now used the Zpey Competition Fly Lines for some weeks and we are extremely satisfied with the results. We have measured several of them, casted them full length and, of course, experimented with different ways of adjusting (cutting) the lines to fit different rods, different conditions, different casting styles and different casting events. Here are the results and facts from countless hours of discussion, casting, cutting, more casting and so on:

1. The coating of all the lines
The coating of these lines might seem slightly stiff when you take it out of the bag, but the lines will soften up after just a couple of hours of casting and stay wonderfully soft thereafter.

2. The 60' Single Hand Competition Fly Line
Even though there might be small deviations, this line weighs 27 grams and is about 18,2 meters long. For competitions with a maximum line weight of 27 grams, you can cut up to 30 centimetres in both ends of the line (front and rear), depending on how safe you want to be regarding the 27 gram limit. If you need a lighter (or shorter) line, you can cut more from the rear. If you need a line with more turnover capacity, you can cut from the front. Remember always to cut short lengths and to always test (cast) the line after every time you cut it.

3. The 75' Double Hand Competition Fly Line
Even though there might be small deviations, this line weighs 61,5-62 grams and is about 23,8 meters long. The reason for this extra length (1 meter longer than 75') is that the line has been "blessed" with an extra meter level line at the front and you have to cut off at least half of this meter. We advice you to cut between 1/2 and 1 meter in the front. Start with 1/2 meter and test the flight and turnover capacity before you cut more. Then you can cut more from the rear of the line according to preferred weight and length. This line is a wonderful alternative for the many spey casting competitions with 15 foot rods, standing in water. It will also be a very good line for the 15 foot overhead casting competition (with lines of maximum 55 grams) in the upcoming World Championships in Norway in August. If you cut up to 1 meter in the front and cut the rest from the rear of the line, you will end up with a 55 gram line measuring about 21 meters. Remember always to cut short lengths and to always test (cast) the line after every time you cut it.

4. The 82' Double Hand Competition Fly Line
Even though there might be small deviations, this line weighs 70,5 grams and is about 24,8 meters long. We would advice you to cut between 1/2 and 1 meter in the front and then cut to preferred weight and length from the rear of the line. Remember always to cut short lengths and to always test (cast) the line after every time you cut it. This line is a very good alternative for the 15 foot spey casting competitions, standing in water. Depending on your height, your rod and your casting style, the preferred weights and lengths of this line will vary from caster to caster. Some will prefer an almost full length line of close to 70 grams, while others will cut the line down to 63-65 grams. You will just have to find your own specification through testing. This line could also be perfect for a shorter 55 gram alternative for 15 foot overhead competitions. You will then cut between 1 and 1 1/2 meters in the front and take the rest from the rear of the line until it weighs around 55 grams. This line will be shorter than the 75' alternative (under 20 meters) and will be a perfect choice, especially for windy conditions.

5. The 100' Double Hand Competition Fly Line
Even though there might be small deviations, this line weighs 83 grams and is about 30,5 meters long. This is a line for 18 foot rods and spey casting from platforms. For casters preferring long lines, this line can be used uncut. For better turnover, you may cut up to a maximum of 1 meter in the front, but we advice you to be cautious, cut short lengths and always test the line before cutting more. When you are satisfied with the front, you can cut for preferred length and weight from the rear of the line.
