Lilleheim’s peculiarities!
February 2010 - Colourful spaghetti for dual personalities
Being born a hard core Gemini (my birthday is June 5th), I have been blessed with dual personalities. Personalities that exist side by side, by the way; unlike what I think is the situation for real schizophrenics, where one personality takes over completely in certain situations. The really mad one of me is therefore never allowed to be alone on stage. The sensible other of me is always there to take over when things get out of hand. The one arena where madness is looked upon as a necessary state of mind (by its members, of course, not by outsiders) is fly fishing. Fly fishing is where both of me agree completely and are able to cooperate and where both of us go bananas together. Critical readers might argue that if even the sensible me goes mad, it’s because the mad me takes over, but I like to think of fly fishing and fly casting as activities where madness creates a joy so pure that the original negative meaning of the word (madness) is changed to something utterly positive, and that it is then sensible to be mad.

November 2009 - Good results in fly casting competition in Japan
Mathias Lilleheim and Tommy Aarkvisla return with heavy metalWe had heard rumours about a fantastic fly casting competition in Japan. The famous Norwegian spey caster Knut Syrstad had participated last year and was very impressed with the level of the Japanese casters. We also heard from the Carron Team that the Japanese casters had improved considerably and that the competition was run very fair and very efficiently.
Tommy had won the 18 foot speykasting competition at CLA this year, using a rod from CND, and Mr. CND himself, Nobuo Nodera, was so impressed that he invited Tommy to this competition in Japan with the impressive name of JCA Anglers Class Masters’ Casting Competition. Sneaky little me managed to tag along and Nobuo was generous enough to include me in the deal.

June 2009 - River “Hemsila”: Zpey’s Trout headquarter
Tor Grøthe at “Grøthe Farm” is waiting for you.I’m writing these words around June 20th and the Mayflies have been hatching in river “Hemsila” for almost three weeks already. The trout have also registered this and have been feasting on emergers and duns for the same amount of time. Beautiful fish up to three kilos have been kissed on the head and returned to the river and still the best part of the season hasn’t started. When the Mayfly Ephemera Aurivilli starts hatching, even the big ones go bananas and the first reports of airborne Aurivillis are already in.

June 2009 - Thank God it’s summer …..
Cold, barren, bleak, inhospitable….. The winter land close to the North Pole formed its people the hard way. People having to fight to survive nature, to force survival out of austere soil, to give hope to new generations: People carrying stubbornness, suspiciousness and survival instincts as invisible armour against everyday life and against each other. From a Darwinist point of view I guess it was inevitable that a seafaring people, in stead of fighting each other, would turn their eyes to easier prey and more valuable treasures. The Vikings killed, burned, raped, plundered and stole, but, as in most warrior cultures, there was an opposite reality that the history books to a certain degree have chosen to neglect. Between these contrasts, we can presage a more nuanced picture of our ancestors, our cultural heritage and our spiritual background.Read more »
June 2009 - Scandinavian winter depressions!
December 22nd. The darkest day of the year. The day when the average Norwegian fly fisher is most depressed. Two days until Jesus and Santa will, once again, fight for the spotlight on a day reserved for hope and happiness.Today, however, hopelessness is harrying the family’s patriarch. Dad is sitting in what he likes to refer to as his study. He’s alone. The rest of the family stays away. “Dad is tired”, says mum to their kids. Come let’s bake some pepper cakes.

October 2008 - Guaranteed madness!
Conformity is one of the fashion words hovering in the periphery of modern human being’s existence. Under the letter C in the dictionary, we find synonyms like "consistency, agreement, acquiescence and correspondence". It’s all about our genetic propensity to cultural accommodations. The fear of being different. The fear of too much well-being. We are limited by religions, by bureaucracy and by cultural constraints. It’s safe to be looked upon as one of the pack, just like all the others. Too safe. In spite of this, Norway has, on several occasions, been acclaimed the world’s best country to live in. We are born with unique possibilities. Possibilities to do something with our lives. To thrive in life. We grow up on foundations solid enough to allow some slack, to have some fun, to be positively mad, to piss on conformity.Read more »
October 2008 - Lilleheim’s peculiarities!
Under this headline, I will regularly share some of my peculiar thoughts with all of you visiting this web site. Sometimes just thoughts around subjects of interest to fly fishers around the globe, other times more specific articles about fly casting or fly fishing, but I would also like to convey thoughts, ideas or adventures from you out there in the real world. Perhaps even with a picture or two to enhance the mood of the story. Please send text and pictures to post@zpey.no kindly using the headline Lilleheim’s peculiarities in your mail.
Thanks in advance and welcome to all of you who, for some reason or other, would like to take part in this madness!
